It was a school policy at David Meekis Memorial School that everyone entering the school building had to remove their outside footwear. A few of us had clean indoor shoes or slippers that we wore inside the building but most people of all ages walked around the school all day or evening in their socking feet.
Before you get the mistaken impression that the children of Deer Lake all have big feet, let me mention that this collection of footwear belongs to adults that were in the school one evening playing Bingo.

David Meekis Memorial School did not have a gymnasium or large classroom. The monthly school assembly was therefore held in the school hallways. The students of all grades carried their chairs from their classrooms and sat in closely packed rows in the hallways. Here you see the school vice principal holding a microphone at the interesection of two hallways and trying to speak to students in four different directions.

The community bingos were held in the school hallways because the school did not have a gymnasium or other large room and the community did not have a community hall or other facilities. The lack of a gymnasium and community hall made it very difficult or impossible to host many typical school and community events such as a school Christmas concert, a community meeting, school dances, graduation ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and any form of indoor recreational sporting activities.
