A teaching assistant ringing a hand held bell to inform the students that it was time to line up and go inside. The school did not have any bells or sirens on the outside walls of the school like a modern city school has.
If you look carefully you will notice that the bell is falling apart in his hands. This hand held bell had to be repaired many times during the school year. In a place as remote as Deer Lake it is difficult to try to buy a new bell. In a school without an industrial arts classroom it is difficult to try to repair a broken bell or make a new one.

Petting a teacher's dog.

The school principal and his family lived in this teacherage.

A small group of German tourists visited Deer Lake in June of 1999. One of the German tourists brought a chain saw with him. He arranged to give a demonstration to the students of his skills as an artist making large wooden carvings using a chain saw. He was very disappointed when these were the largest logs he could find after spending half a day out in the forest with a crew of local workmen. Despite his disappointment with the small size of the logs he did give a demonstration to all of the students of the school. These are the three carvings he created using a chainsaw.

At the end of the school year the school maintenance staff boarded up all of the windows of the school in an effort to prevent breakins and vandalism while the students and teachers were on their summer holidays. Soon heavy construction equipment arrived and began digging up and removing all of the sandy soil from the school yard. Apparently fuel spills in the past had contaminated the soil and it was considered to be a health danger for the students and teachers.
The End
