The architects built the school to resemble the shape of an eagle. The tall point above the front doors is the bird's head looking upward. To visualize the rest of the eagle the best view is from up high in the air looking down at the building.

From the eagle's head above the front doors the school spreads out into two wings. The high school wing with classrooms for students in grades six to twelve is on the left. The elementary school wing with classrooms for pupils in Kindergarten and grades one to five is on the right.

Teacherages

A few of the teachers had an opportunity to live in these three teacherages across the street from the school. Each of these teacherage is a two story duplex building with a two bedroom apartment and a one bedroom apartment. Teachers not lucky enough to live in one of these buildings were living in much older single story teacherage buildings or basement apartments.

Houses and Community Buildings

street of homes

This street of homes was formerly the runway of the community airport. The airport was closed when the gravel and dirt highway was built from Thompson to Gillam providing the community with a cheaper method of transportation to the outside world.

Split Lake Fire Hall

The Split Lake Fire Hall.

While I was living in Split Lake the local police force consisted of band members that had been appointed as police constables by the band chief and councillors. I heard in the school staff room that their police vehicle had been wrecked in an accident so occasionally the police constables used trucks from this building to patrol the community.

One winter day my pickup truck slid off an icy residential street into the ditch only a block from my teacherage. A police officer driving a fire truck came to my rescue. The fire truck made a very effective tow truck as it pulled my vehicle back up onto the road. Thank you to the police constable who was doing his community patrol that Saturday afternoon in a fire truck.
