Birch Ridge Community School

Students Fishing at the Narrows

Fishing is a very important economic activity for feeding the families of Turnor Lake. As part of the cultural activities of Birch Ridge Community School a number of field trips were planned in the late spring to take various groups of students fishing. Most of the fishing trips were cancelled because of cold, wet, windy weather. I was fortunate to be able to join this group of students and staff members on an afternoon trip when the weather was excellent and the fish were biting.

The fish being caught by the students are Northern Pike. The local citizens of Turnor Lake call them Jackfish.

Some of the staff members from the school set up two tables near the side of the road. Here they taught the students who showed an interest how to cut up the fish to make fillets. The fish fillets, baked potatoes and bannock were all cooked over a fire. After everyone had eaten the students were encouraged to package up the leftovers and take them home to feed their families.

As we were within walking distance and visual site of parts of the community there were many people who came to visit us during our fishing field trip.
